Dave Barry writes an essay to entertain but also inform an audience. His topic is focused on road rage and many other small inconveniences, such as parking and choosing a brand of juice that can cause frustration in today’s society. He writes a satire, poking fun at the different kind of drivers on today’s roads, as well as stereotypical people in the supermarket. While on the first read, the essay makes one laugh and there is a mocking tone, a second read reveals a more serious one. This essay could easily be changed to one solely focused on how quick to violence people are in America. He uses this explanation to compare his character as a driver to others on the road, he believes that he is a normal driver, like almost every other driver on the road. He is setting the stage for his character which represents the “drivers who actually qualify as normal” (76). His character becomes obviously increasingly angry and frustrated, as the author uses all capital letters to mouth off. By letting his character become enraged he proves his point: fellow Americans become very angry very easily at minor inconveniences. Further pushing this point he begins to rant about “Parking Lot Rage” (77), “Shopping Cart Rage” (77), “Way to Many Product Choices Rage” (77) and finally “Automated Phone Answering System Rage” (77). All of these are small inconveniences, part of everyday life, he is demonstrating how impatient people in this world truly are; probably due to immediate gratification from technology. Although this essay is more horation satire than juvenalion satire, it is touching on something serious that effects many people.
