What does it mean to be masculine or feminine in the spiritual and religious realm? Traditional gender roles have each sex categorized by specific expectations determined by society which impacts their relationship within the papacy. In Na Prous Boneta’s inquisition, gender lines are blurred as she assumes a feminine, mystic role, by detailing her visions and a masculine role by challenging the pope and becoming a leader. In “The Confession of Na Prous Boneta, Heretic and Heresiarch, Carcassone, France, 6 August 1325,” otherness, spiritual transgendering, and a same-sex double are used to demonstrate how societal gender construction within the papacy is challenged through visions and voice.
