The controversy surrounding gun control and the Second Amendment in the United States comes from people having different interpretations of their constitutional right to bear arms, along with concerns about public safety, and individual freedoms. The Second Amendment of the US Constitution states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” One side of the controversy argues that having proper gun control is necessary to reduce gun violence, prevent mass shootings, and enhance public safety. They advocate for stricter background checks, limitations on the sale of certain firearms, and measures to keep guns away from people that may have a history of violence, mental health, or …show more content…
On the other side of the controversy, the supporters of gun rights argue that any sort of restriction on guns infringes upon their Second Amendment rights and threatens their ability to defend themselves, their families, and their property. They insist that responsible gun ownership is a fundamental aspect of personal freedom within the United States, and that laws should focus more on enforcing existing regulations rather than imposing new restrictions. People care about this issue because it is a matter of public safety. Gun violence, like mass shootings, homicides, and suicides, has a severe impact on communities across our country, causing citizens to push for what they believe will reduce these things from happening.
