THE IVORY TRADE

The ivory trade is an issue that is often overlooked or not cared about. The ivory ornaments or jewellery that people own are made from the tusk of African or Asian elephants. Elephants have been a target for poachers in Africa. These animals are killed inhumanly and for this reason I think there should a complete ban of Ivory and products that contain ivory across all countries in the world. I believe banning the ivory trade will prevent the inhumane killing of elephants and allow elephants to prosper in their natural habitat without the threat of poachers.

Poaching is the reason why elephants are being killed on a mass scale. The ivory from elephant tusks are carved into ornaments, jewellery, piano keys or simple decoration. The high price tag of ivory has now referred to ivory as White Gold. The demand for ivory in Asia has meant the price of ivory can be as much as $1,500 per pound . This equivalent to 36,500 killed each year but research suggests that this number is higher. The population of elephants in Africa was 3 to 5 million elephants in the early twentieth century, due to poaching the population has dropped to 400,000 elephants in Africa and 35,000 in Asia. The significant drop in number of elephants there are in world is due to poachers par taking in the ivory trade.

It is unclear to the majority of the world's population how inhumane the killings are of the elephants. The process can be gruesome and cause elephants to die slowly in agonising pain. The advancement of technology has lead poachers to use more sophisticated technology to kill elephants, these include
