The Crucible Act 2 Scene 2 Summary

Scene 2 starts after a day, next morning. Ian wants to engage in intercourse with Cate, after she faints, he rubs himself against her. Then he informs Cate about his paranoia of being an undercover agent. She fellates him and then bites his penis. Cate tells Ian that she used to love him but now she doesn’t. Subsequently, a soldier enters the room unexpectedly with a gun. The room is striked by a mortar bomb, as both men recover, the Soldier tells Ian about the war crimes he commited. Cate escapes through the bathroom window. A radical change occurs in the style of Blasted with the entrance of a nameless Soldier (Bicer,76). Henceforth, we are no longer sure whether the location is Leeds or elsewhere in the world. The meeting of the pair, results in Soldier raping and blinding Ian (Bicer, 76) Ian and soldier begins to talk, soldier tells Ian that he witnessed and took part in brutal acts including rape, torture, and genocide. Then, soldier adds that he did all these terrible things as an act of revenge for the rape and murder of his girlfriend Col. Moreover, he asks Ian to write about the horrors of war but Ian rejects it explaining that this isn’t a story anyone wants to hear. After this, soldier rapes Ian, sucks out his eyes, eats them and shoots himself. This scene ends with the sound of autumn rain (As cited in Demir, 39-40,
