All authors use religion to control society. Jonathan Edwards scared people by saying if they don’t follow religion they would burn in Hell. He did this so more people would become one with God and more religious. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne is the prime example of what not to do in their society. If someone goes against religion, they will get punished just like Hester. In The Crucible, anyone who goes against their religion by participating in witchcraft will be hung.
