Danforth holds more power than Hathorne. You know this because Danforth is always being called “Your Excellency,” while Hathorne is called nothing of the sorts. Hathorne is also a judge, while Danforth is Deputy Governor. Deputy Governor is a higher position than a judge of Salem.

The author’s point could have been that doing things with a crowd is easy, but standing up for what’s right can be pretty tough, and could account for a lot of the crazy things people do, such as the Salem witch trials. Basically it’s peer pressure- everyone else is doing it, so why aren’t you?

Elizabeth was lying about the same thing John Proctor did, though it wasn’t her personal experience she was lying about.
