In this play, Greed was a major cause of persecution. Thomas Putnam is one who shows greed. Putnam had his daughter Ruth accuse George Jacobs of sending her spirits out on her while she sleeps. Putnam does this because his neighbor is George Jacobs and he owns 600 acres of land that Putnam wants. Jacobs must forfeit his land to Putnam because he is the only one to afford it, and the persecution got him hung. Giles brought the evidence to the heaving when he Francis, and John are trying to save their wives. “if Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeits up his property and there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece” (Miller186).
