There are many conflicts presented in The Crucible by Arthur Miller as he portrays the lives of citizens in Salem, Massachusetts during the infamous witch trials. The author presents several different types of conflicts such as internal, one against the town or one against one. A key conflict throughout the play is an internal conflict within John Proctor. John is torn between two choices that will determine how the rest of his life plays out. During this time period because one's reputation determines their standing in society, John must to choose between lying or saving his name.

In Proctor's last few moments before he is hung, Hale, one of the judges on the trial rushes up to him tearing the paper he signed agreeing he was apart of the witchcraft. Hale hysterically says to John that he will hang if he does not go back on his word. John protects his integrity and his family name by not going back on his signature crying “[he can and there’s
[Hales] first marvel, that [he] can” keep his word (Miller 212). When John is hung he dies with the respect of a man who doesn’t go back on his word protecting his reputation within the community so his family does not have to deal with a bad name.
