In this excerpt from The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, the author uses dramatic dialogue to display the couple’s relationship as a toxicity that goes back and forth between the two.
Starting off the excerpt is the middle of what seems to be an argument between Proctor and Elizabeth. In line 6, Miller uses ethos to show how Proctor will “not have your suspicion anymore.” Proctor intends to scare Elizabeth into stopping her fighting simply by using his so-called authority over her, furthermore showing how Proctor is terrible as well. Later, the author shifts to Elizabeth having the upper hand when she “loftily” speaks in line 7. The couple have the tendency to let their prides get in the way which is shown as the passage progresses.
