Themes are subjects that characters display throughout a story. In The Crucible written by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem witch trials and what they had to go through. Therefore it holds many themes making the play both universal and enduring. “ laughs insanely,then” “ A Fire, a Fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face and your face…. God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together”. (Miller,Act3,11590) this quote shows a short part of all these themes keeping of a good name, empowerment, and hysteria. The way empowerment works is one person will be in control of a few people and they will stand up for their leader and every time the leader yells at the group or a person in it, she gain power and it makes her feel empowered. Power is something that many will always want , but in reality it never turns to be good. Abigail displays empowerment very well in many places throughout the play. “ Abby, Abby, I’ll never hurt you more!” (Miller,Act3, 132) Abigail's group of friends are making her feel empowered by sucking up to her manipulative ways. Hysteria plays an enormous part in this play by tearing down the community in Salem, by turning it into an environment where people act on their grudges.
