Liberalism is the belief in the importance of individual freedom and equal rights (Minogue, Kenneth). Liberals believe the government is responsible for protecting individuals from danger. In 1776, Thomas Paine published the pamphlet Common Sense, to warn American citizens that the government could potentially take away people’s individuality and sense of freedom (History.com). Although the release of his paper caused a lot of chaos, he was able to bring out the words for those who were afraid to speak.
Over the past couple of centuries, the definition of ‘individuality’ has gradually changed. Instead of the word being used to describe the unity of a group, it is now used to describe one person. If you asked someone today about what he or she thinks is the meaning of the word, that person would probably say, “being an individual means having certain qualities that makes you different from others.” Many people do not know if it is better to stand out or fit in with the crowd. There have been cases where people made fun of individuals for being themselves. In those situations, it is best to stay away from judgmental people and focus on yourself. There have also been times where people viewed individuality in a negative manner. They rather choose popularity over being a unique individual. There is no reason to be ashamed for wanting to be different. By being an individual, you can establish your own identity and ignore other people’s opinions of you. Not only is your individuality important to you, but it is also important to those around you. Your individuality can contribute to society by suggesting ideas that are outside of the box and by inspiring others to step out of their comfort
