The epidemiologic triad is a fundamental concept that represents the concept of disease causation (Gordis, 2014). The triad involves the interaction between the human host and infectious agent with possible environmental and/or vector factors contributing to the transmission. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) states the key concepts of causation of a disease is to answer the synonyms known as the 5 W’s., including what, who, where, when, and why/how (HHS, 2006). This essential information has been used for centuries to examine the concepts of disease causation and prevention of the disease. In the 19th century, John Snow discovered who, where, when and how of cholera disease without any knowledge of microorganisms or the biology of disease.
