When we are making a vow, oath or a promise and we take it to the next level and include God, then we elevating that promise into a divine covenant, and He is now a party who can establish the terms or punishment should we fail to adhere to our oath.
Marriage is a ritual that creates a partnership between two people. It is an agreement to love, honor, and cherish another person until death do you part. However, when that marriage is performed in a church or with God as a witness, it becomes a covenant because God becomes a party to the marriage, and it is expected that the marriage will include a relationship with Him that extends beyond the ceremony. Divine covenants such as these also include oaths that create a relationship with the church and God, such as baptism, communion, or confirmation.
