A Misogynistic World Misogyny, a concept that has existed in the world since the beginning of time. A concept that is still present today even through all the advances that have happened in the world to accept people for their differences. A concept that is embedded in everything we do and incorporates ideas that we have internalized over time as gender norms. However, some forms of misogyny are more prominent than others. As much as it may not be something that everyone would like to blatantly say aloud, men are considered superior to women. Women are seen as less powerful and oftentimes treated less than human while people are developing prejudice toward them. Misogyny is defined as “the hatred or dislike one has against women”. The laws assist the system in society in which men are treated superior to women and helps maintain this way of thinking. In the United States, a well known moment in history in which women did not have the basic rights that were provided to men was noted through the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Over the course of a few decades women were able to fight for the right to vote and have been officially given the right to vote since 1920 while the fight had first begun in 1850 (Encyclopaedia Britannica 2018). When it comes to discrimination, many parts of the world focus on women as being a body and not an individual with an identity. Child marriage is situation that has been present and still currently exists in many parts of the world. In India for example, as long as a wife is 15 years of age or older, non consensual sex within a marriage is not illegal or criminatory (Olorunshola 2016). Other parts of the world in which this condition exists but at different age limits include Yemen and Singapore. However, as of 2017, child marriages have been officially deemed as illegal in India even though it still exists within the country. One of the basic levels of bringing a change, would be speaking up against wrongdoing. Women are speaking up and encouraging others to speak up when they are experiencing discrimination and different forms of sexism to make people aware of how often events like these take place. Not only does it make people aware of the situation but also helps to bring changes to the subconscious mindset that makes acts of misogyny seem okay, it brings an effort to change this mindset. It is crucial for women to say no when necessary to avoid falling in the cycle and agreeing with the unfair system, instead of trying to bring change step by step. Feminism and the attention it has been getting in recent years is also playing a large role in advocating for the rights of women and bridging the gap between equality. Feminism is being used to empower women so that they also feel confident and powerful and helping people understand what the purpose of the movement truly is, which is
