In the story, “The Fall River Axe Murders,” written by Angela Carter. Lizzie Borden’s character is said to be a murderer who endures various hardships during her life that leads her to a great deal of hate. On August Fourth, 1982 Lizzie was accused of murdering both her step-mother and father. Lizzie’s motivation for her acts come from her feelings towards the house they live in, the imprisonment of her environment, and her step-mother.
Mr. Borden described their home to be “cramped, comfortless, and unpretentious.”(42) Occasionally said to be as narrow as a coffin. Considering the condition of the Borden’s home some people were astonished to know that Mr. Borden was a wealthy man. The conditions of their home made it challenging to live there. Borden had a decent relationship growing up. The last five years that Mrs. Borden and Lizzie had together were rocky. During those last five years is when their relationship started to become unhealthy. Lizzie started to greatly dislike her step-mother. “She used to call her step-mother “mother” as duty bade, but after a quarrel about money after her father deeded half a slum property to her stepmother for five years.” (56) Lizzie would not want to eat dinner at the table with the family if her stepmother was going to be sitting at the table. She did not like anything about her. It was from the way Mrs. Borden would eat to the way she sounded when she ate that Lizzie could not stand. There was a great deal of hate. The hate then lead to the terrifying murder. Not long after the murder Lizzie had said during her trial that Mrs. Borden was not her real mother. Mrs. Borden was her stepmother and her real mother had passed away when Lizzie was a child. She never wanted to claim Mrs. Borden as any type of mother to
