There are many plausible themes that one could find throughout the brilliantly crafted work that is The Fault In Our Stars, but the one I favor the most is the quote from the book , “some infinities are bigger than other infinities.” This quote is first spoken to Hazel and Augustus by Peter Van Houten in response to their questions regarding what became of the characters in their favorite book, “An Imperial Affliction”. Although it is a very thoughtful and a literature answer, the question was a very literal and simple minded one intending to acquire a direct answer. I believe that John Green, while he has stated that his books do not have themes, intended this to be one of the main lessons to take away from the story.

Hazel and Augustus, the main characters, are two teenagers that have suffered from cancer, and so they both eventually learned that neither of them were going to have long lives. In fact, Augustus died at age seventeen, with five chapters left of the book . Therefore , they did not even have a full book of their infinity, before Augustus and their infinity died. Their infinity may have been short lived or less than other infinities, but it was still an infinity.

Augustus had asked Isaac and Hazel to write eulogies in preparation for the occasion, so that he could attend his own funeral. Hazel talks about the meaning behind “some infinities are smaller than others,” in her eulogy she wrote for Augustus. She relates the saying to her and Augustus’s relationship. She explains how their relationship was short, but that she is grateful for the small infinity they did
