1986 in Arlington Virginia, two boys decided to not go to college. Jerry Murrell grew up in Northern Michigan and went to the university of Michigan for college. He didn’t have any money so he got a job running a fraternity's kitchen. During his last year of college both his parents died. A couple years later he married, had three children; Jim, Matt, Chad, and Ben then got divorced. He then married Janie Murrell, and after starting the business, they had Tyler. When the time came for Jim and Matt to decide about college Jerry gave them the option of going to college or starting a business, since neither boys wanted to go to college and they didn’t have very much money they decided to start a business. He then came to the problem of deciding on a name, at the time he had four sons, so decided with Five Guys. When his youngest son Tyler was born that’s when the Five Guys referred to the five sons. They first started in Arlington, Virginia. The boys all wanted to franchise but in the beginning they were unable to because they couldn’t get the money to expand t other places on their own. They then ended up spreading to five other locations throughout the Northern Virginia area by 2001. Their ingredients are all fresh, they have some of the same vendors that they had in 1986 to now. People were very skeptical of Jerry and their business for going up against Mcdonald's, Burger King, and other fast food burger places, but Five Guys is different. All the boys have different positions in the business today such as, Tyler; their youngest, runs the bakery, Ben sells the franchises, Matt and Jim travel around the country to visit stores, and Chad oversees the training. Around the world they have over 1,400 locations today. They are very specific with how they do everything in the kitchen.
