It could be said that horror is one of the most iconic genres in cinema history. From Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock. To recent films much as Friday the 13th or Halloween. Throughout the horror genre we can see how the use of dark lighting, suspenseful sound effects and structure have evolved to what the horror genre is today. Hitchcock’s influence on new horror films such as Friday the 13th 1980 brought a new sub genre, “Slasher”. This sub genre focused on the violence of the horror genre, emphasising the ‘horror’ through murder particularly stabbings and hand held weapons. there are always a set of rules or sequences in common on all horror and slasher films. One of the most notable sequences of “Slasher” is the climax. We see the heroine being chased by the murderer into a dead end. We then finally experience the heroine surviving and killing or framing the villain.the most modern and well known horror of today is scream 1996 we see how these set of rules and sequences play out. Laurie strode in Scream is a perfect example of this as she survives all possible odds ending in killing the villain. Scream also has a parody aspect to it and lets us relive the classic horror techniques and structure , but also lets us laugh and comment on the structure and techniques of horror.
