The Freedom of Knowledge Gloria Steinem once stated: “We've begun to raise daughters more like sons... but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters” (“Gloria Steinem Quote”). This is a result of the gender inequality that has taken place in our society in the 21st century. Due to a common misconception, parents often refuse to raise their sons like daughters because their lives would be filled with banter. In the society we live today, boys are not allowed play with dolls; however, girls and boys share the same activities. This is a result of gender inequality. Women could not vote until the 20th century because they were believed to be less intellectual than the likes of men. Throughout history, men have viewed women as property and as a result, women were forced to rely on men. Women could not be independent because of the lack of quality jobs for women. They were forced to take inferior jobs in society because of how society viewed them. Men treated their women as property since society portrayed women as feeble minded and unable to comprehend and react on the same level of men. Many voices of women were silenced and belittled in result of this injustice and common misconception. Even in the 21st century, women are faced with discrimination. However, women mainly face this injustice in developing parts of the word such as the middle east and parts of Asia. The increase of education for girls will decrease the likelihood of death while giving birth. An educated mother would have a better job, making enough for the hospital. “If all mothers completed primary education, maternal deaths would be reduced by two-thirds, saving 98,000 lives”(Girls Education-the facts”). Giving education not only helps the girl's lives, but it also helps saves lives. Also, education narrows the pay gap between men and women. In the 21st century, the gender pay gap is one of the pressing issues. However, if more girls are educated, women will receive more quality jobs which decreases the gender gap. Also, girls that are educated tend to provide more nutrition for their family. “Malnutrition is the underlying cause of more than a third of global child deaths”(“Women Deliver”). Educated mothers are more more likely to provide their child with the best nutrients to prevent sickness and get a better understanding of health and hygiene (“Women Deliver”). Also, Education increases the amount of freedom. Girls who are educated tend to have a great awareness of rights and a greater confidence and freedom as a result of education. Education helps improve their family's survival as educated girls tend to have a better paying job(“Girls Education-the facts”).
