The Holocaust was the mass murder of Jews and other minorities under the German Nazi regime from 1941 to 1945. An aspect of this era that is extremely well-known throughout the world are the horrid concentration camps, a camp where people are confined under extremely harsh conditions and have their limits put to the ultimate test. Prior to the Nuremburg Medical Code, the Nazis were experimenting on humans to try and advance German medicine and develop new ways for their soldiers to survive. According to Slate, one of the recorded experiments was at the Dachau concentration camp, “Nazi doctor… submerged approximately 300 naked victims in ice water for two to five hours… he noted when the subject lost consciousness” (Palmer). Their human endurance and drug experiments were repetitive and had already been researched by other countries in a humane way. They performed predictable experiments, such as the salt water one which would clearly end up in death by dehydration after drinking nothing but sea water for 12 days. The famous experiments on twins had absolutely no effect on improved understanding of genes or Biology and looking at the facts, Mengele seemed to have made up his own “science” and performed random procedures to amuse himself. Although medical journals have cited the Nazis research, it played an extremely minor role in any change that has taken place in the improvement of medical understanding. The torture and horror the Nazi doctors put thousands of innocent men, women, and children through was disgusting considering it was either for their twisted and incorrect science that led to no discoveries or their own personal amusement.
