1.1 THE AUTHOR
She was born in 20th March 1937 in Honolulu. Her birth name is Lois Ann Hammersberg. She is an American writer and she writes mostly children’s books. She had an older sister and a younger brother, so she is the middle child in her family. Her sister died in cancer at age 28. This really bad experience seems to come back from her first book A Summer to Die which is about two sisters’ relationship where the older one die.

One of her colleagues encouraged her to write books for children. After that she wrote A Summer to Die which published in 1997 and this time she was 40 years old. The same year she and her husband got divorced.
After this she moved to Boston she met with a nice guy and they were living together until 2011 when her boyfriend died.
During her life, she won two Newbery Medals for Number the stars (1990) and The Giver (1994).

1.2 BACKGROUND

The Giver is a 1993 American novel by Lois Lowry. This is like a soft science fiction book. Lowry won many awards for this book and there are lots of people how said that this is the best book for young adults.
The book was inspired by Lowry’s life. Her father was in a nursing home because he lost his long-term memory and Lowry noticed during the visits that without memory there is no pain and she imagined a society where the community does not have memory about pain and bad experiences.

He lives in a community where everybody has an assigned role. The Ceremony of Twelve coming soon so Jones is nervous because he will be elected for his future's work. His father is a Nurturer which means he should care for the new-borns because in this world the children do not know who is their biological parents. Therefore, Jonas’s parents are not his real parents.
The ceremony is finally arriving. This is a very important event so all the community is there, included the Chief Elder. During the ceremony, the Chief Elder skip Jonas’s name. The community and Jonas think maybe she made a mistake because it has never happened before.
The Chief Elder explains at the end of the ceremony that Jonas’s selected as the next Receiver of Memories which is a very respectful one.
After that he starts his training. Jonas’s trainer is the previous Receiver but after Jonas becomes the new one the previous Receiver becomes the Giver.
During these trainings the Giver puts his hands on Jonas’s back and to give the memories to Jonas. Slowly Jonas learns all colours, feelings and pain as well.
Thereafter Jonas begins to wonder if it is really better for the community not to have any memories about the past. Finally, Jonas realised how superficial the life of the community is. He thinks his all life is based on a lie, so he decides to do something really unexpected and drastic.
