Prejudice is still very common to this day. Many people tend to overlook prejudice because it is an everyday thing. We are so used to the discrimination and forced judgement, that we forget how it affects others. Prejudice is spreading and getting far more out of hand than it once was, There are so many factors, such as psychological and environmental factors, that lead to the cause of prejudice .
Psychological factors such as jealousy and greed play a big role in prejudice. Someone may bully or avoid another because he or she is jealous of what the victim possesses. For example, Jeannette was picked on repeatedly throughout The glass castle for her appearance. This may be because they are jealous of Jeanette's looks, resulting in them trying to make her feel insecure about herself for their own self satisfaction. When Erma, Jeanette's grandmother in The Glass Castle, questions why Jeannette is hanging out with an african american and Jeannette stands up for herself hoping her parents would take her side, conversely, they side with Erma in fear of getting kicked out of the home, Because of this, Jeannette states, “Situations like these, I realized, were what turned people into hypocrites.” (The glass castle pg. 144) Jeannette's parents tell their children not to judge a book by its cover and to never surrender to fear or prejudice, yet, they don't actually follow through with this when in a prejudice environment. This is a sociological factor. People are raised with the idea that prejudice is wrong, but when experiencing prejudice firsthand it's hard to distinguish what's wrong from right.
