Does Rex or Rose Mary Fulfill Being a Parent Better? In the memoir The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls tells the story of her experiences in her Childhood, Teenage Years, and Adult Life. The main detail throughout this book is the permissive parenting style that affects the kids' lives. Rose Mary is the more responsible parent because she is not constantly showing reckless behavior. Both Rex and Rose Mary had no concern at times the kids misbehaved. “It was self-defense,” I piped. “Dad has always said that self-defense was a justifiable reason for shooting someone” (89).
