In Colin Powell’s essay, ‘The Good Soldier’, Powell talks of how people viewed his race and background while he was the American secretary of state, a solider, and a motivational speaker. He says that most people in America viewed him by his race first then by the position he at that time. An example he used was when people would come to him and say, ‘“Well, gosh, you’re the black secretary of state.” I say, “No, I’m not. There ain’t a white secretary of state somewhere. I’m the secretary of state who is black, you know; there’s a difference”’ (Powell, pg.193). This shows that he believes that your race shouldn’t be an important factor to your livelihood, since it doesn’t matter in certain jobs. Powell shows that race isn’t an important
