“The Grandfather” RD In “The Grandfather” by Gary Soto, the author, discusses the grandfather's love for his avocado tree. The tree was his favorite because it “offered hope and the promise of more years.” It took many years for the tree to grow edible avocados. The grandfather had the tree ever since it was a seed. In the short story it said that “the mayor’s, who allowed office buildings so high that the haze of pollen from the countryside could never find its ways into the city.
