The gravediggers in Fever 1793 honored Mattie’s request that Grandfather be buried with a prayer, because they realized people should ‘do the right thing,’ even when no one can attest to it. In “Always Go to the Funeral” the narrator did not want to attend the funeral of their old fifth grade math teacher, but their father told them to go because it was “the right thing to do”. This contributed to the main idea of the poem, “Doing something good when you don’t want to”. By attending the funeral, the narrator did something good when they didn't want to. Similarly, the gravediggers in Fever 1793 were told by Mattie that “This was a great man, Captain William Farnsworth Cook, of the Pennsylvanian Fifth Regiment, He was my grandfather; you will
