The Grey Sleeve Analysis The story, The Grey Sleeve, is about a Civil War Union infantry, who come upon a house. In the window of that house one of the corporals spot a grey Confederate sleeve, and investigate. Inside the house they found a young girl suspiciously handling something behind her back. They persisted that she tell them where she was hiding a Confederate rebel. It was only when they threatened to search upstairs, that she broke down into tears and revealed what she was hiding, her grandfather's unloaded pistol. Upon learning that all that she was trying to do was protect the grey sleeved man, the Captain has sympathy for her. "'You touch that girl and I'll split your skull!'"(Crane 16).
