After the Joker’s bank heist, the film cuts to a parking garage where the villain Scarecrow is making a deal with some gangsters. The dramatic music starts as the villains begin to panic when they think the Batman is near. But instead multiple men in black masks and hockey pads appear holding guns. This presents the first debate the film analyzes. Batman eventually shows up and defeats the villains and ties them up, but he ties up the other vigilantes as well. One of the vigilantes says that he’s just trying to help, and then questions what gives batman the right to be a vigilante but not them? (Nolan, Dark Knight). I believe this is what the ancestor card indicated. The card is associated with wisdom and established institutions. In this case, the card might have appeared to foreshadow Batman’s internal conflict that is caused by his bypassing of the established criminal justice system. Batman will need to find the wisdom to know whether he is truly doing the right thing, and therefore this indicator card aptly describes the journey he is about to embark on. Batman’s beliefs are further tested when the Joker promises to kill targets until the Batman turns himself in. He does this to buy Batman some more time because he truly believes the Batman is the hero that the city of Gotham needs, and as further events unfold Batman’s confidence is boosted by this grand gesture.
