By 1978 Mao Zedong’s economy, and efforts to bring it back, had failed. Under Mao, the Chinese people suffered, and the economy was one of the worst in the world (find stat). After Mao’s death, and the disbandment of the gang of four, Hua Guofeng seized power, and tried to reinstate many of Mao’s ideas. Despite, a shift to light industry, Hua was still extremely focused on self-reliance, and stay closed from the outside. In addition, his attempted “new leap forward”, a revival of the horrific leap forward under Mao, was a complete failure.
