Being a Latino in a world where everything is different from what you are used to is hard for Sandra because it made it hard for her to fit in. She felt lost from this world and lost from what others were talking about. She liked the idea of Mexican American having a voice and being able to tell their stories. Cisneros would tell stories that could relate to her such as “poverty, sexism and racism”. Esperanza in this case was not happy with the environment she lived in, she did not like the concept of home or the lack of it, she wanted a home with a happy family like on the T.V “They always told us that one day we would move into a house, a real house [...] like the houses on T.V” (Cisneros 4). Another thing Cisneros values is family, she thinks that everyone she have strong family bonds because family is always going to be there for you. Esperanza also values family and thinks it is important to been close with you family. Her best friend is her sister “Nenny” and she is really close with her even though she can be annoying sometimes. Sandra respects her parents decisions for the most part but still thinks that her parents are there to guide her or else she would be lost without them. As well is making sure to keep the education moving forward and to never give up on your dreams. Even though sometimes it is hard to keep a job you got to do what you think is best for yourselves. Sandra and her family were originally from Mexico, so when they moved to Chicago it was hard for you family to keep a steady job. Her father would move back and forth between the two countries between cramped apartments, much like Esperanza and her family, “We didn't always live on Mango Street[...]But what I remember most is moving a lot” (Cisneros 3). The reason their father's moved around multiple times is because as a Mexican he was unable to get a steady job in Chicago, this making him have to move back and forth in order to make a living and provide for his family. A cultural expectation for Mexican's Sandra mentioned was that people think they do not have the ability to be something exceptional and there was a case of a young girl named Ruthie who was very talented, but got married at the young age instead of taking a job, “There were many things Ruthie could have been[...] She had lots of job offers when she was young, but she never took them.
