Sandra Cisneros’ novel, The House on Mango Street, is about a Latina girl named Esperanza who grew up in a neighborhood in Chicago, Mango Street. Through a series of vignettes, Esperanza reflects on her experiences growing up and the challenges she faces. One theme in Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street is the harsh reality of growing up. An example of this theme is found in Vignette 23, “Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark” when Esperanza states, “And I think if my own Papa died what would I do. I hold my papa in my arms.
