The first part of the story guides us through Katniss’s life. In showing her daily life, we get to see her hunting skills. Katniss then goes through the process of saying goodbye to her family and friends and then traveling to the Capital city. Katniss ends up leaving Peeta so she can go to get a gift the Gameskeeper arranged. At the Cornucopia, Katniss is nearly killed but she saved by Rue’s fellow Tribute from her District as a gratitude for showing kindness to Rue. Then the rules of the Games were changed allowing two surviving Tributes from the same District to win.
The story ends after Katniss and Peeta survive the mutts and the final fight between them and Cato. Katniss and Peeta are pronounced the winners of the 74th Annual Hunger Games and are taken back to the Capitol for recovery and celebration. When met with their mentor, Haymitch, he warns Katniss and Peeta that the President is not happy with their death pact. Their stunt with the berries humiliated the games and tarnished the Games placing Katniss and Peeta in danger once again.
The novel is focused on the theme of hunger within the Districts. In each level there are different amounts of food supplies. The Hunger Games are seen as both good and bad. The good part being that for the victor of the Games a lifetime supply of food is given to the family of the victor and a large portion for the district as a whole. I believe the novel kind of gives a little bit of everything so just about anyone can enjoy it. There is not only humor but there is heartache. There is not only love but there is physical battles between characters. The author uses a lot of visual words that help a reader actually picture what the scene is. For example, in the beginning of the novel, when the author is describing District 12, she uses phrases like “black cinder streets” and “squat grey houses”. There was not really anything that I did not like about the book, probably that it ended where it did. However, that made me excited to read the second
