Rebecca Skloot is an American journalist who specializes in science and medicine research. She has explored wide range topics and she has appeared in New York Times Magazine and Oprah Magazine. She is most well known for her best seller book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It describes the life of an African American women named Henrietta Lacks and her family who were unknowingly used as one of the most important tools to medicine. It all started in 1951 at John Hopkins when Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Unknowingly her cells were used in many science experiments that would lead to development of the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and much more. How this came about was when they took her tumor cells and the scientist realized they could survive in a lab and continue to grow. At this time scientist were not able to grow cells outside until they met her. They named HeLa cells after her. Referring to the first two letters of her first and last name. Today we want equal opportunity for everybody and when Skloot presented this story more American’s supported the Lacks family than they would have back in the 1950’s. Skloot did however mention many journalist before her attempted to discover who was behind the HeLa cells but was never able to actually name Henrietta Lacks. She would use other scientific articles about HeLa cells to present her argument that Henrietta Lacks was the person behind the HeLa cells.
