Dorothea Dix was a woman who supported individuals who had mental illnesses. She had a passion for working with individuals who suffered from mental illnesses. Dix tried encouraging the government to fund money to asylums and prisons to improve their conditions. She also argued for reform. She met a man named Pope Pius IX, which read her reports and was so shocked by these horrible environments, so he decided to build a new hospital for the mentally ill in Europe. With these reports she showed them to the government asking them to grant money to these asylums and prisons to improve their conditions. The government increased the budget to expand the State Mental Hospital at Worcester. Dix went to Europe and found many differences between the public hospitals and the private hospitals.
