In the summer of 1787, fifty-five of our founding fathers struggled with the challenge of creating a strong central government that still preserved individual rights against the tyranny of the state. Tyranny originally meant rule by a dictator or king, but the founders realized that it can come from other places as well. The founding fathers made sure the U.S. would not be ruled unfairly by a king, a majority or other means by devising our constitution. The three ways that our constitution ensures freedom of tyranny is by defining federal and state powers, by providing a separation of powers among three equal branches of government and by developing a system of checks and balances.
