While attending Cortland College, I attended classes that sparked my interest in the cultural impact on health. One of those classes was called HIV Epidemic, where we explored social, political, and cultural issues allowed HIV to continue to spread at rapid rates especially in relation to affecting many countries in Africa. Another class that opened my eyes to racial topics was called Health Problems of the Underserved, I read a book about the cultural barriers that Hmong-Americans have with western medicine. From attending college at Cortland, I have a greater sense of how not to let race come between a potential life changing experience. Moving to extremely diverse New York City to further my education and in hopes to one day become a nurse was in my eyes, my only option. Now having attended Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing for a little over a year, I would like to continue to learn about cultural differences by participating in the trip to
