In 1986 the governing body of College Basketball, The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) introduced the three point shot, thus revolutionizing the game. In its first couple seasons the shot was scoffed at. The best way to play offense in 1986 was to throw the ball into the post and pray your biggest guy could lay it in. However the 1986-87 season proved that it was much more effective to shoot from outside. The 1986-87 National champions were the Indiana Hoosiers led by Steve Alford who made seven three point shots in Indiana’s 1 point victory over Syracuse. Since that game the three point shot has taken off, and with it, scoring in College Basketball. In the 1986-87 season it was uncommon for to make one three point attempt a game. In the 2016-17 season (still ongoing) the lowest average of three point field goals made per game was just over 4. While that isn’t a large increase it is shows that the game has evolved and with an evolving game must come evolving rules. Over the past several years many rule changes have been implemented to increase scoring in College Basketball such as an extended charge circle under the basket and a shorter shot clock. These rules along with a spread out style of play and more athletic players have led to a spike in scoring over in College Basketball.
