Loretta Sinclair and her family live in a rugged Chicago community with her mother, Rosa and her two children Tracy, a young autistic girl, and Thomas, who is eleven years old. Loretta struggles with drug addiction and realizes that her autistic daughters' condition will potentially worsen each and every day. Rosa decides to send her daughter and grandchildren to southern Mississippi in the delta to live with their cousin Earl.

Loretta, Thomas, and Tracy are each greeted by Earl. Earl is a kind- hearted, wise man. He lives with his wife Annie whom shows symptoms of Alzeihmers due to her old age. Each of these characters go through developmental changes, events, and milestones throughout the movie that shape them into who they became. Loretta,
