Jay Winik drives the fact that April 1865 is a life changing month for America. He says “ it is a month as dramatic and as devastating as any ever faced in American history”. This shows not only is April 1865 an important month in history, but maybe the most important month in history. James Swanson does not make a point that JFK’s assassination was the most important moment in Americas history, but an important moment. Swanson says JFK’s assassination “was the greatest national trauma since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln”. It is said that “No other attempt this bold has been carried out, before or since”. Europeans have experienced many tragedies like this, but for America it was a first. The Nation was shocked. It took a long time for everyone to realize what had happened. The news of his assassination did not spread as quickly as the news of JFK’s assassination because the technologies of Lincoln’s time were not as advanced as they have become. Some people did not know of Lincoln’s assassination until twelve days after the event. After JFK’s assassination almost everyone knew within the day. This slow spread of information made it hard for people to know what was happening in real time with the government, etc. Kennedy’s assassination was easier for the nation to cope with because the nation had previously went through an assassination of a president. People had hope that the nation would recover from this tragedy, the nation had before so they can do it now. After Lincoln’s death, it was chaos. People did not know if this nation could survive after his assassination. They were afraid that they would end up like other countries that fought in civil wars,
