In this Native Heritage Month, I participated the event of the Film Screening and watched the film Lake of Betrayal. The Lake of Betrayal is a documentary film which talks about the history of the Seneca Nation and explores how the construction of the Kinzua Dam impacts the lives of the indigenous people within the Allegany Reservation of the Seneca Nation. After watching this film, I was moved by the spirit of the Seneca— to protect their lands, hometown and the traditional culture, the Seneca tired their best to protested the plan for the project and even appealed to President John F. Kennedy to halt the construction. Though, at last, the Seneca failed in the protest, their spirit to protect the lands impressed the public.
According to the film, in the 1960, the government decided to construct the Kinzua Dam. Upon the construction of the dam, over 10,000 acres of Seneca nation land would be flooded. Under the Treaty of 1794, the government decided to relocat about 600 Seneca from their hometown to Salamanca, a town which is near the northern shore of the Allegheny Reservoir. However, under such circumstance, it was necessary to maintain social justice and weigh up the gains and losses of the two parties. For the Seneca, the small population of the nation and their surviving tradition are all the precious treasure for the country. However, for the government, in addition to construct the Kinzua Dam, there should be another solution to the flood issue. Thus, in the future, when the American Native facing the similar issue, I believe they will keep their spirit to protect their homeland as the Seneca did in the film, and I believed their basic rights could be protected and the proper requests would be
