Herbert Spencer was well known in the field of Sociology, but was also often criticized for his views and was considered an empty philosopher. Spencer seemed to target his theory on the how the world around us progresses and changes and the results of those changes on society. His theory incorporated other fields of study such as biology and psychology with respect to nature and the environment around us and how that effects how society can either thrive or decline. The interpretation by society of those things surrounding us in nature is a general perception according to Spencer. His theory was not geared to involve the mentality of society but more towards what society is exposed to. Spencer explains society as constant and recurring changes over their lives from an imbalanced and confused state to a more harmonized and equal state. This harmonious state cannot be achieved without society agreeing to live in balance with nature. Spencer looks to the field of biology in considering how important nature is to how it can shape society as well as how the external world can help to create a specific balance within society and ultimately have a more productive and morally correct society. One of the goals in his theory was to achieve social coherence and harmony. Spencer also thought on all accounts that God was the one that determined good and evil but the external environment could play a part in the disappearance of that evil.
