If people had stopped and reflected a moment, they might have realized that what they're doing was horrendous. When the lottery was played, some people were excited and others nervous. Everybody gathered at the center of the village, in front of a black box. The major male from each family grabbed a paper from it, and the one that had a black spot had the ritual sacrifice done. That is why in the beginning, children were grabbing stones, preparing for the victim of the tradition. A normal tradition may be dressing up and singing every 16th of September (like in Mexico). Also eating a certain food because it's a symbol of something or just a parade or dance. On the contrary in this town, in which everything seems so normal and nice, bad things happen. As said, in the story, the one who got the black spot in the lottery was killed by rocks. Miss Tessie Hutchinson was killed with them after getting the black spot, and dying saying the words "It is not fair".
A tradition should be nice, where people socialize, where everyone comes together and enjoy something in common, a custom. In that town, the main tradition was violence, nothing more, but violence until killing someone. It doesn't matter that it's a tradition, it should be stopped and changed by something pleasant. What
