In Puerto Rico homosexual was something that was not well known and it was never accepted in the community. The only thing that was accepted there was heterosexual otherwise homosexual were outsiders; they were outcast from the people. Consuelo never knew anything about homosexual’s until she was introduced to Maria Sereno. Maria Serano was once a man named Mario Manuel Santiago Sereno until he decided to become a women. Another example, would be her cousin Patricio. Patricio played with “dolls” which made him not a man. “By nearly grown muchacho playing dolls”(Cofer, 14). This shows how the actions of a young man can be different from a woman. Only because Patricio was playing with his puppets and cooking for himself made him less of a man. When Maria approached and admired Patricio’s flowers made the people think there was something going on with him and Patricio. That it meant something more and making his dad taking him away because they were afraid he might turn out to be like Maria
