Humans require a certain amount of social connections as a basic survival need. When we are deprived of these basic social connections depression can develop. The medical definition of depression as stated by Charles H. Zastrow and Karen K Kirst-Ashman “Depression referred to as depressive disorder is a psychiatric condition characterized by a disheartened mood; unhappiness; lack of interest in daily activities; feelings of or unworthiness. There are many social causes that can bring about depression. Some of those include financial difficulties, marital problems, abusive relationships and lack of friendships, and illness or death of someone close. Individuals suffering from depression are more likely to be unemployed or recently divorced. Women experience greater risk of depression than men and 1 in 10 women suffer from depression after giving birth. Depression is more prevalent in those ranging in age from 45 to 64. I can personally relate to most of the social causes that I have listed as well as many others who have suffered from depression. Charles H. Zastrow and Karen K. Kirst-Ashman stated that young adults struggle with developing a sense of who they are, what they want out of life. Unfortunately many of these individuals never find the answers they need to answer their questions. Those who do not find answers are apt to be depressed, anxious, indecisive and unfulfilled. Many of the social causes mentioned above can contribute to the inability to find the answers
