Gregor Samsa turns into a bug and his whole life just went upside down. After reading a few articles I noticed that before Gregor really had no purpose to life except when it came to working to keep his family afloat. So it makes me wonder if work played another role for the family besides providing money. Maybe they used it as a sense of purpose, but when he turned into a bug all of that was lost. He was never concerned that he had turned into a bug. All he ever thought about was how he couldn't work at first. Then you see it among other characters. His mother works so much she has no energy to do anything or to think of anything besides providing or getting money. The father, at first he didn’t work at all, we see later on that really he was capable. Although when he started back at work that's all he did. " (Metamorphosis). This quote explains that the father now never took off his uniform because he never needed to. That was the only thing he ever did and now the only thing he would ever need. I think this goes to prove just how absurdity fit into the Metamorphosis as a literary device. Kafka knew how to use it and was smart when it came to writing about
