The Oath of the Horatii painted by Jacques-Louis David is a neoclassicist work. This paining illustrates the “artistic ideals of neoclassicism” through the use of “simple, solidly modeled forms in bright, strong colors” ("Painting (The 1800’s)”). David’s work is a revolutionary painting that “radically separates the sexes” (Carrier). Masculinity and femininity are contrasted against each other. Men are shown as strong and fit for battle while women are weak and not permitted to face death.
