Lottery, a process or thing whose success or outcome is governed by chance. The meaning of lottery should more be "pure luck, weather good or bad." The title "The Lottery" helps to contribute to the story, because the lottery they have is luck for the townspeople if they don't get picked, and bad luck for the person that gets picked. In the story, the tradition was the lottery, and people believed the lottery was there to help them have a good harvest. Old Man Warner says, "'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.'" Every year, the townspeople gather in the town square, and each family goes and chooses a slip of paper for that family.
