The conflict is one of the most important piece in a story. It can change and develop the story. In the stories, “The Open Window” and “The Gift of the Magi” the authors both use conflict to develop the story. In the stories, there are similarities, differences, and items which help show conflict. In The “Open Window”, Vera tricks Framton who can to the countryside to calm down. As he waits for Mrs. Sappleton, Vera tells him a story that causes him to run away. In “The Gift of the Magi” Della and Jim both need gifts to buy each other for Christmas. However, they don’t have enough money, so they sell worthy items to buy gifts. The authors use conflict to develop their story in similar and different ways. “The Open Window” conflict develops the story in different ways. An item that helped develop the story is the open window. The open window symbolizes hope that someone will come back through the window. Vera’s trick includes the open window which helps develop the theme and the story. The conflict of “The Open Window” also lead to the end of the story. Della and Jim wanted to buy each other gifts however they did not have enough money. It helped develop the story because, in the rest of the story, they tried to get money.
