The Story “The Outcast of Poker Flat” written by Brett Harte, is a story in which was set in the 1800’s where technology was unrecognized. The story would have changed dramatically due to the insertion of one piece of modern technology. In the story four troublemakers are banned from the town of Poker Flat due to their decisions. Mother Shipton a madam along with her Duchess, a thief, as well as a gambler are the characters in the story. The group decided to sleep in a cabin in the mountains overnight, the next morning they wake up to find Billy, known for being a thief, stole their horses and majority of the group's supplies, the man before long ends up dying along with the horses. Mother Shipton, the Dutchess, along with Tom Simson, and Piney Woods, who joined them in the cabin while they were stuck to weather through the blizzard.
